Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada and raised in the US. She's worked as a media critic since 1995. Feminist Frequency is a site which hosts video and commentary analysing portrayals women in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. Feminist Frequency examines the way women are represented in popular media. In her efforts to break down stereotypes that are associated with women in pop media, she is also working with issues that relate to the targeted harassment women and other classes of people online. Holding a master's degree in social and political thought from York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after presenter and has presented speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival as well as at the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She was fascinated by gender issues and feminism at a early time. In 2009, when she was still studying at university she launched the Feminist Frequency web site. An ambitious woman who wanted to create a web series that examined the representation of gender in video games was targeted in an internet-based campaign. It was not enough to deter her. It actually made her more committed to be a feminist as well as media critique. She has won many awards for her contributions to feminism. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winner for her work as a media critic. She was also the director and founder of Feminist Frequency a nonprofit educational group that focuses on pop-culture representations of females.
